86.10° North was one of my first pursuits in directing a short film. Having limited resources, I chose to write a contained (but ambitious) story taking place completely within one room and having 2 characters in total. This allowed my team and I to focus our resources on designing that one room, which I chose to be a research station, and squeeze as much production value out of it.
While the location is important for production value and mood, a film is only as good as the actors in it. And so I took extra care in selecting the actors and made sure they have a good chemistry between them. Although only the main actor is on camera, it was crucial for me that his conversations over the radio would feel real. I opted to have the 2nd actor on set but hidden, to allow them to work with each other, as if they were truly communicating using radios.
