About Yotam ‘Jon’ Afek.
As director and a filmmaker based in London, I’m driven by a lifelong fascination with the power of the moving image. A graduate of MetFilm School London, I combine my love of directing with a versatile technical toolkit, including editing, and VFX.
My high school graduation short film “Shattered Memories” was named an "Audience Choice" at the lift-off global sessions 2023, signalling my ability to connect through story. In high school, I established and managed a collective of student editors and VFX artists across all grade levels, providing vital post-production support for student graduate films.
I believe that a director’s vision is best served by a holistic understanding of the medium. My expertise in post-production and visual effects allow me to see a project through every lens—from the first word on the page to the final cut in the edit. This technical agility, paired with a focus on emotional storytelling, defines my approach to film. Whether directing a narrative feature or a stylized music video, I always look to push the boundaries of my abilities. I always looking for new creative challenges.
My Five-Year Plan
Short Term (Year 1-2)
My immediate plan after university is to find a job. Either as a runner/assistant in a post production house or as a production assistant in a production company. This will allow me to save some money which I can use to direct more short-films and send them to festivals. In addition, I will try to establish a presence on social media, and use it to network with other industry professionals.
Mid Term (Year 3-4)
With a few festivals under my belt, I will try to get an agent and slowly transition into working solely as a director as well as continuing to pursue my passion projects on the side.
Long Term (Year 5)
Direct my first feature film, building on what I’ve learnt as a low budget film maker and VFX artist to make get the most production value out of the budget.
